중세학과 동아시아학의 만남 : 행복한 결합일 수 있는가?
본 연구는 문화 간 전이 및 비교사에 대해 오늘날 심화되고 있는 관심을 해부하는 가운데, 중세학의 시야와 범위를 확장할 가능성을 모색한다. 본 연구는 중세학의 내외에서 기존 서구의 전통적 공간관에 대해 가해지고 있는 비판에 주목한다. 그러한 고찰에 이어 전근대 동아시아 사회와의 비교사적 연구를 통해 중세학의 외연을 넓히는 한편 이를 통해 기존의 유럽 중심주의를 극복할 필요를 제기한다. 이를 통해 본 연구는 서구중세사회와 전근대 동아시아 사회 간에 보이는 유사점과 차이점을 이해함으로써 중세학에 새로운 활력을 불어넣을 가능성을 모색한다. 이를 통해 오늘날 중요성을 더해가고 있는 세계사 내지 지구사적 연구흐름에도 중세학이 중요한 기여를 할 수 있음을 제시한다. 마지막으로 본 연구는 중세학과 전근대 동아시아학과의 비교연구의 한 예로서 중세정치사상과 전근대기 동아시아 정치사상의 비교고찰을 스케치함으로써 끝을 맺는다.
A Rendezvous Between Medieval Studies and the East Asian Studies. A Happy Encounter?
This essay discusses the possibility of expanding the scope of medieval studies by an in-depth analysis of the new research interests in cultural transfer studies and comparative history. It begins with considering the rising demand inside and outside the medieval studies to revise the traditional spatial concept of the West that has been criticized for being Eurocentric. On the basis, this study draws attention to the pre-modern East Asian studies and a possibility of comparative study, which will be sensitive to the similarities and differences between the Western medieval and the pre-modern East Asian societies, affirming the need to continue the endeavor in the field of cultural transfer studies. Such a comparative approach may eventually vitalize medieval studies by providing a new perspective and insight. It will also contribute to the ongoing discussions on the possibility of world/global history. This essay ends with sketching a comparative study of medieval political thought and the pre-modern East Asian political thought as an example of such a comparative endeavor.
